THIS LOVING DARKNESS: THE CINEMA AND SPANISH WRITERS 1920-1936

By C.B. Morris (Oxford University Press, 1980) 196 pages

5 3/4" by 8 3/4" hardback

book condition: excellent

dustjacket condition: very good, corner clipped on inside

Notes: The Spanish writers and critics who delighted in the visual and imaginative richeness of he cinema were opposed to those who saw in it a threat to the theatre, to good writing, and to moral standards. Happily many writers thrived in this climate of conroversy and debate with which the first three chapters are converned: the response of many to the challenge, appeal, and stimulus of the cinema was so varied and imaginative that films and the actors who appeared in them constitute a major theme in and a major influence on Spanish literature from 1920 to 1936. The three chapters devoted to poetry highlight the genre that was most affected and enriched by the cinema, which left a particularly deep imprint on the work of the distinguished poets Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda, and Frederico Garcia Lorca. The one chapter devoted to prose fiction concentrates mainly on the novels and short stories of Francisco Ayala and Benjamin Jarnes.
