  Mother Bernle sends her first two sons off to war.

  The postman delivers the letter informing Mother Bernle that she has lost her sons in the war.

 Mother Bernle pleads with Major Von Stomm not to take her youngest son into the war.

  Joseph's brother dies in his arms.

  Mother Bernle must learn her letters to pass immigration in the United States. She recites them in the schoolroom for the teacher and class before leaving her hometown.

  At Ellis Island, she cannot remember her letters.

  In spite of Joseph's protests, Mother Bernle is being held overnight at Ellis Island.

  Lost in New York.

  Together again, at last.
