Scenes from the movie

 John and Mary's first date.

John gets a job in an office . . . a large room with a multitude of men at desks, just like him . . . one of the crowd.

 The birth of their first child.

 A happy family at the beach.

 John and Mary watch in horror as their child is hit by a truck.

With John out of work, Mary has to take up dressmaking in her home.

 In desperation, he accepts a job juggling and wearing a sandwich board advetising a restaurant -- a job he had derided not too long ago.

 Mary has decided to leave John.

 

"You don't understand . . . he has always depended on me --"

 At the movies . . . still one of the crowd, but with renewed hope.
