by Sidney D. Kirkpatrick (E.P. Dutton., 1986, 301 pages)
In 1967, famous director King Vidor set out to solve
the 1921 murder of fellow director William Desmond Taylor with
the intention of making a movie about it. He never did make the
movie, but, after his death in 1982, Sidney Kirkpatrick, Vidor's
authorized biographer, decided to use Vidor's research as the
basis for this book. It's engrossing reading, very detailed with
insights into the key players - Mabel Normand, Mary Miles Minter,
Edna Purviance, Mack Sennett and others - as well as interviews
with several people who remembered the murder. Check out the article
on the William Desmond
Taylor Case written by Mabel Normand biographer William Thomas
Sherman on the "Silents Are Golden" article and essays
page.
