"Eighty Silent
Film Stars: Biographies and Filmographies of the Obscure to the
Well-Known"
by George Katchmer (McFarland & Company, Inc..,
1991, 1065 pages)
I like books like this - first because I get the life
story of a silent star in a concise format (from a few pages to
maybe 30 or so pages), and because I get to read about some of
the "obscure" stars, as the title indicates, that I
wouldn't otherwise have any information on. The late George Katchmer
took great delight in researching the lesser known stars and publishing
his writings in periodicals. He's pulled together 80 excellent
short biographies in this book of such silent personalities as
(the list is far too long to name everyone) George Bancroft, Noah
Beery Sr., Joe Bonomo, Hobart Bosworth, Edmund Cobb, Ricardo Cortez,
Reginald Denny, Richard Dix, the Farnum brothers, Lefty Flynn,
Robert Frazer, Kenneth Harlan, Johnny Hines, Norman Kerry, Tully
Marshall, Thomas Meighan, Antonio Moreno, Jack Mulhall, Conrad
Nagel, Eddie Polo, Ruth Roland, Tom Santschi, Richard Talmadge
and many, many more. Each comes with a filmography that includes
year of release, distribution company director and story credits
and other cast members. This is a hardback book (alas, no dustjacket)
that is rather expensive (about $90) but a welcome addition to
any silent movie library.
