"Queen Kelly:
The Complete Screenplay by Erich Von Stroheim"
edited by Bret Wood (The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2002,
413 pages)
For those who are frustrated that this film was never
completed, here is the complete screenplay with the original ending,
the revised ending and an ending quickly filmed by Swanson in
an effort to recoup her losses on the film. For those who wish
to see the film in its most complete form, Kino International
prepared a restoration of "Queen Kelly," supervised
by Dennis Doros in 1985. This version retained virtually all the
existing von Stroheim footage, including the surviving African
scenes. Outtakes, bits of Swanson's ending, still photos, and
titles were used to bridge the narrative gaps and approximate
the original ending. With this screenplay, one can only imagine
how von Stroheim would have interpreted it all for the screen
if he had completed the task. An informative introduction gives
the background on the genesis of the idea for the film and the
ensuing troubles that brought filming to an end. Good for the
diehard von Stroheim or Swanson fan. Many good photos.
