by Buster Keaton and Charles Samuels (Da Capo Press,
Inc., 1960, 323 pages)
Fortunately, Buster Keaton's autobiography is still
around and can be purchased in paperback form (click on Amazon
link above). The book is honest and frank and, and most importantly,
we get Buster's personal take on such events in his life as the
Fatty Arbuckle scandal, his downslide after being one of the three
most popular comedians of the twenties, his marriage break-up
and drinking problem, and, his comeback in later years (a touching
remembrance of his appearance on "This Is Your Life,"
for example). Not a lot of details about the movies themselves,
but extremely enjoyable and engrossing reading. Better get this
one while it's still in print.
